Resident Pet Hurricane Shelter Kit

Shell Point residents' pets are welcome in our hurricane shelter in the event of an evacuation.  However, there are also veterinarian hospitals and clinics that will accept pets, including these nearby locations: Tails-a-Waggin Animal Hospital (482-6897) and Coral Vet Clinic (481-4746). If you have a special need pet or if your pet is aggressive or does not react well with other animals, boarding with professionals would probably be the best avenue for you to pursue in the event of a potential storm event.  Our staff members who will care for the pets will provide the best support that they can, but it is a chaotic time and from our experience in 2004 with Hurricane Charley, the animals can act out their stress to include breaking out of non-sturdy cages, barking so frequently that they make themselves sick, and/or getting wet by tipping over their water as they move about their cages.  The pets will remain in their kennels other than for group dog walks, which will occur as the weather allows.

Resident Pet Hurricane Shelter Kit

Residents who would like to bring their pets to the Hurricane Shelter may do so by following these guidelines:

Place instructions and any other pertinent information about the pet's disposition (nervous, etc.) outside of the cages so that staff are prepared before opening a cage.  Please tag your carrier & kennel with the names and address of the owners and the pet.  It would be helpful to tape a picture of your pet on its carrier, particularly for dogs who may go out for walks in groups.

Cats will remain in their carriers throughout the shelter period.
